Arlene is Professor of Classics and Public Policy at Durham University where she leads projects which focus on the long history of oracy. A specialist in ancient rhetoric for contemporary school learners, Arlene provides expert advice to policymakers in the UK and internationally. She leads the rhetoric strand of professor Edith Hall’s ‘Aristotle Beyond the Academy’ project and appears regularly on tv, radio and in the national press.
In 2023 she was made MBE by King Charles III in recognition of her Services to Education and in 2024 she was elected a member of Academia Europaea.

Janja is Associate Professor of Linguistics at the University of Primorska and Senior Research Associate at the Educational Research Institute in Ljubljana. She heads the Centre for Discourse Studies in Education and leads Slovenia’s national Educational Research Programme. At the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency, she chairs the Expert Group for Science Promotion and serves on the Scientific Council for Interdisciplinary Studies.
She collaborates with all four public universities in Slovenia and contributes to national expert groups in education policy, rhetoric, language education, and citizenship. Internationally, she has worked with universities in the UK, Croatia, Norway, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Poland.
With over two decades of experience, she regularly works with teachers, offering workshops and lectures on rhetoric and argumentation. She co-developed an innovative model for teaching rhetoric in Slovenian schools. In 2012, she received a national award for co-authoring a monograph on the representation of Europe in Slovene school textbooks.
